The Marshalltown School Dental Program is a service to help families access dental care. It began in 1997 to help address the growing problem of children, especially children in poverty, who were unable to obtain dental care. There are many health problems associated with a lack of oral health. These health problems can affect learning and school performance as well as a child's self-esteem.
Services are two fold: education/prevention and referral and treatment. The schools offer oral health education within the schools as well as a dental sealant program. A referral process is in place for children not able to access dental care. There is also financial assistance to pay for the dental care for those children who are eligible. The referrals will be made to the local Marshalltown dentists, as well as the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. The school nurses in each of the nine buildings in Marshalltown can be the first point of contact when using this service.
