Our History

The Marshalltown Area United Way (MAUW) was established in 1929 under the moniker Greater Marshalltown Community Chest to raise funds for local agencies supplying critical human services to area residents. Marshalltown Area United Way became affiliated with the United Way of America in 1962. Since then, MAUW has been mobilizing Marshall County in working toward healthy community, youth opportunity, and financial security for every person in our community, impact areas that are the building blocks for a good quality of life. Building on decades of community listening and connection, we have the local perspective and platform to respond quickly to moments of crisis and opportunity.

Marshalltown Area United Way provides a critical mechanism to encourage local charitable giving and facilitate the distribution of gifts to local partner agencies that will enhance the quality of life for all Marshall County residents. Proceeds from the annual MAUW Campaign fund 27 agencies and 30 programs that promote self-sufficiency, develop successful youth, strengthen families and individuals, and support those in crisis. Each of these agencies listens to, respects, and responds to the needs of all people, of all backgrounds and identities. Ninety-nine percent of funds raised through the Campaign and associated events stays in Marshall County.

Every day, through our words and actions, we and our community partners across business, government, and private sectors serve, connect, and inspire people to take action for our community. Every year, hundreds of volunteers join MAUW’s staff and Board of Directors in taking action toward making Marshall County a place where everyone thrives.

As with so many other examples where the people of Marshall County step up in times of need, donors and volunteers generously come together to change lives and help shape our community. They give, they advocate, and they volunteer. When we come together for good, we are greater. That’s why we partner with people and nonprofits across the community to address issues at every level, from expanding affordable housing to ensuring more children learn to read. That is what it means to LIVE UNITED.
