Hospice provides education, medications, medical equipment, oxygen, pads, and whatever is needed for the patient's comfort, regardless of financial status. Bereavement services are also offered following the death of the loved one in the form of phone calls, visits, monthly bereavement letters, cards on special occasions, a support group, and grief groups for children and for adults. A library is also available with helpful books, tapes, and videos. All of the bereavement services are open to the public and free of charge.
June of 2009 Iowa River Hospice opened the first inpatient hospice home in Marshalltown. This "home" is a 6 bed unit for those who meet the hospice guidelines and offers services for acute, respite and residential care. Acute care is for those who have the need for skilled nursing for pain or other symptom management. Respite care is "rest for the caregiver." Under this level of care, the patient can reside in the hospice home for up to 5 days so that the caregiver receives a break. Residential service is basic nursing facility type care and does involve a daily room and board charge.
The hospice home offers another option of care for those who cannot or are unable to remain at home. This home sits in a peaceful environment at the southeast section of Marshalltown east of the mall. The home features a bedroom suite for each patient and family and a sitting room with couch, chair and TV, phone closet, and patient's private bathroom. There is a general family room where families can cook, shower, and gather for get-togethers and support one another. There is also a chapel for prayer, quiet time, and visiting and a children's room for little ones visiting the facility. The Iowa River Hospice home is all about caring and support for the hospice patients and their families at a very fragile and intimate time in their lives.
